New Roots is a program run by the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization International Rescue Committee. As a part of their different “resettlement efforts,” the IRC operates New Roots as one way to integrate refugees into their new home and help them to become self-sufficient. Refugees from all over the world can find peace and prosperity while working in one of the International Rescue Committee’s community gardens.
The New Roots informational web page cites the fact that “More than 42 million people are currently displaced worldwide due to persecution, conflict and disaster” (rescue.org). These people need our compassion and support. This what the New Roots Program strives for: “Through community gardening, nutrition education and small business farming, New Roots is giving hundreds of refugee farmers the tools and training they need to grow healthy and affordable food and become self-sufficient” (rescue.org). For more information about the individuals whom the International Rescue Committee is helping, check out their stories as told in the New Roots Video Series, or read about the personal journeys of Ah Lun, Siddiq, and Tsitsi.
